Artificial Intelligence (AI) has had a bumpy history with highly fashionable periods followed by lows. Its applications in CAE , that is Mechanical Engineering and Simulations as design tools have been met with mixed feeling at each wave. One of then best example of failure is the usage of expert systems for Finite Element simulations. In the 90s, there was some tentative at Genetic algorithms, not followed by any wave. At the beginning of our century, Support Vector Machines and related Big Data analysis brought a new tide, but the difficulties of training and data handling again slowed down the momentum, and the dimension of the parameter space was a barrier in CAE. The last few years witness an AI tsunami called Deep Learning. In our talk we will briefly describe Neural Networks and Deep Learning (DL). We will review recent applications in Numerical Simulations.

Next we will try to analyse where, if and how Deep Learning can contribute to solve difficult problems in CAE.

The main drawback is that it is presently a kind of "magic" method. But the huge efforts of some of the main players (Google, Facebook, Amazon ...) has a definitive influence in some optimization problems and the solution of complex systems ( such as the autonomous car). CAE engineers must evaluate the possible changes (and limits) coming from Machine learning, whether DL, or SVM or even Genetic algorithms.

A challenge facing all academic institutions teaching engineering in today’s rapidly evolving technological climate, is how to remain relevant as traditional methods of doing things are disrupted either partially or completely, by new and exciting technological developments.

Academic institutions are traditionally convoluted hierarchies of long-established and entrenched layers, policies and traditions, both in pedagogy as well as operationally, and, while generally progressive and open to new ideas, universities are cautiously resistant to disruption because of the follow-on effects such changes may cause to their established qualification/subject/syllabus/content structures and the wider impacts this may have. Engineering in industry pushes itself to be at the cutting edge in respect of improving current methodologies and yet this is at odds with the University curriculum which is based on solid applied physics for the engineering domain - this has been largely unchanged for decades, but still applies in respect of foundational knowledge for student trainee engineers.

With all the new technologies and associated software tools available to the academic space, the challenge for the modern engineering academic is how to integrate these ‘wonderful new toys’ into the engineering syllabus so that they are proactive learning tools which complement rather than detract from the important fundamentals of engineering science, effectively solving two objectives with a single course of action.

Engineering design and operational decisions depend largely on engineers understanding of applications. This includes assumptions made to simplify problems to solve them. However, these assumptions often introduce errors compared to the actual behavior of an application. Increasing access to sensor or virtual data and computational resources, combined with democratization of advanced Machine Learning (ML) algorithms leads to greater use of ML. This brings field data and engineering knowledge together allowing for an increased level of overall accuracy in decision-making and design performance improvement. ML can use field or simulation data and it can be of two types; supervised or unsupervised. We will be covering the use of both the types of ML to solve challenging engineering problems ranging from remaining useful life (RUL) prediction and anomaly detection using sensor data to multi-disciplinary design optimization using simulation data.

The presenters will also explain how multiphysics problems like e-powertrain development can be solved with a model-based development approach, which considers electrical and electro-magnetic simulation of systems and sub-systems.

For the FE-Model Descriptions, automation of some items can represent a major time saver, as well as reducing the chances of typos or mistakes being introduced, and Altair’s Automated Reporting Director does offer a solution to this. At OHB System AG, we had a chance of working with the Product Design team be introduced to this feature and custom OHB modules were developed. These modules proved to be major time-savers, for documents which can easily be over 100 pages with copious amounts of tables and associated images. The capability of generating document templates to be used across the company has also meant that a standardized approach can be taken.
